How to Save a Life..

"No one knows for certain how much impact they have on the lives of other people. Oftentimes, we have no clue. Yet we push it just the same" ~13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher
It's so unbelievably true. We impact on other lives without even knowing. Whether good or bad...everyone does it. Putting a smile on your face every day at work or being super enthusiastic about the most mundane of jobs...it's incredible how much happier you can make everyone else around you feel.

You know that saying "A smile a day keeps the doctors away"? What if that were true? I challenge you to see how many people you can make smile in an ordinary day. Make up some simple cards, each with a saying on them for example, "Have a nice day" or "Keep wearing that awesome smile". Stand near the door of the train and handed them out to random people who get off. Imagine if that was how many lives you saved that day? What if all that person needed was a reason to smile that day? What if that card convinced someone that they shouldn't take those pills or cut their wrists and bleed out? A simple gesture can go a long way. I would like to challenge anyone to see how many people they can make smile.

Like in the book by Jay Asher, the quote above makes you think before you act. The main character, Hannah Baker recorded all the reasons why she ended her life. All the little insignificant moments that drove her to the edge. Not one of those people thought anything of their act...which made it all the more unfortunate. You never truly know. A simple act of kindness could save a life. The simple notion of telling people you are here to listen. It's not hard, yet, so many people fail to realize how that one harsh word, that one stupid prank, that one time you couldn't be bothered to listen...could be all it takes to convince someone they are alone.

I challenge everyone to think about just how much they might impact on someones life, whether in a good or a bad way. Whether to a stranger or a friend. Something as simple and free as a smile can save a life.
